American Paper

One of my clients was American Paper in Richmond Virginia. The company was in it’s final stage of bankruptcy and they asked me to come in and help them with data conversions and provide my expertise with the AS/400. I hadn’t done any programming in over six years (and most of that was only code review) but it all came back to me and I was happy to see some of my old programming utilities.

Having experienced a company bankruptcy (Handy Andy) I empathised with the few remaining employees who were left to pick up the pieces.

This was an amazing business and it has probably touched our lives at one time or another. This company existed for over 85 years and their primary product was the little numbered donation envelopes that you receive from your church.

I took some photos of some envelopes that we found from 1935.

I thought it was a small business until I went inside. It was a sprawling company with lots of connected buildings.

This is an ancient printing press. Unfortunatly, it is headed for the scrap pile.

This woman had been with the company for over forty years. She was a great worker and one of the main go-to people in the company.

This is Elvis’ oldest fan.

The workers abandoned their desks with work still left undone.

Jeff was one of the last employees.
